Marvel's Avengers is officially on its last legs, with support for the lethargic live-service game coming to an end in September, with one last big patch making almost all content in the game free and setting the state of the game in stone. The single-player segment of the game, the campaign and associated side missions will still be playable post-September, for those of you still clamouring to play through it.
Square Enix has apparently renamed the title to reflect this, being rebranded as Marvel's Avengers - The Definitive Edition on PSN and other digital platforms. Behold this powerful new marketing direction in action below:
What do you think of this latest move from Square Enix? Is it ever too late to cast yourself in a new light, or is this simply a case of too little, too late? Reinvent yourself in the comments section below.

***** this up has to be the most embarrassing move by any video game company ever.
@Loamy The single player part of the game was really fun…. I remember the intro convention area was really cool… but you couldn’t even replay any single player content when the game first came out… I’m hoping that of course was fixed later on lol..
Of course it’s too little too late. They’re shutting the servers down for it!
They should’ve made this a full-on single player campaign. If they focused their assets on that, I bet it would’ve succeeded. Such a shame really
How's the single player mode? How long would it take to complete?
Grinding for the costumes was actually the only thing I sort of enjoyed in this game. I quite enjoyed the combat (although the enemies you fought were very repetitive and boring), but with nothing to work towards or earn, I won’t be firing it up again. I did enjoy playing from time to time, but when the whole heart behind the game was to extract every cent from the player by shaking microtransactional content in front of them at every turn, it’s no surprise that it was too hollow to keep players
I enjoyed the game a lot even though it wasnt perfect. The worse thing surrounding this game was the oh so popular hate band wagon everybody jumps on..if you didnt like the game fair enough but if you bought the game even though you knew chances were you wasnt going to like it then you have no right to get upset other than with your self for being daft..it didnt deserve the level of hatred then and it sure dosnt now..move on people..
Honestly, I played the demo ages ago and it was such a dull and unfun experience that it all being free still doesn't make it tempting. It all felt so clunky. A bland beat 'em up mixed with a terrible take on Diablo. I guess being a mediocre slog does make it the videogame equivalent of the MCU, though.
As a Live Service game, it's well and truly dead. I enjoyed the demo I got on initial release and have kept an eye on this to see what happens. I can get the PS5 version on Amazon for £18.39, so for a single-player game, that's a decent price.
I'm not expecting God of War / Uncharted levels of AAA mastery, but people saying it's decent for solo player, I'll bite.
I'm also not paying the £44.99 the PS Store is asking for though!
UPDATE: succumbed and got it for £17.75 from Amazon
This game should be a huge success if it's a single player offline game where you play 5 of the avengers, rather than online only game where you play some rando chicks that's not even in the avengers movie 😕
The single player mode was surprisingly good imo. The game wasn't bad. My biggest issue that made the game unfun at times were enemies had moves that you can't attack them out of. Screws up the flow of combat. Game could have been better if they weren't trying to be destiny.
@haoie My gametime says 13 hours. They had a free trial one weekend, and I was able to play the entire single-player campaign and the first story DLC. I think they may have released 2 or 3 more story DLCs afterward, so add a few hours for each one of them. Overall, the campaign is pretty good, but go into it with low expectations.
@Eagly I’d say it’s worth $5.
A lot of the single-player campaign is pretty good, but some of the repetitive live-service elements start to show up throughout. Despite having multiple distinct superheroes to choose from, they pretty much all play the same. And you’re mostly punching 3 or 4 types of robots over and over and over again.
If you go into it with those low expectations, you’ll probably find some enjoyment. I can’t speak for the online co-op, since I never tried it, but if you have some friends to play with you might find some extra fun.
So, it’s worth $5, maybe even $10, but not much more than that.
No comment on the size of the download then?
How does a game this bland get to 150GB?
By most accounts, the game was content starved.
@Loamy even though I love the franchise (GotG) That game totally flew under my radar. Bought it on sale and loved every minute of it.
Single player is fine and anywhere below £15 and you should get enough enjoyment. The start of the story mode is really good. Ok it has a few difficultly spikes and issues with certain enemies but now with plenty of content that was hidden behind a paywall (I assume you still need to unlock some them through game play?) there is enough here to make it a fun solo player experience.
Would recommend
@Cutmastavictory @CWill97 @Loamy Game definitely would have been better off as a 100% pure single player experience.
Also didn't help the combat and gameplay mechanics are bad imo...only part of the game I've been enjoying are the story cutscenes lol.
Not to mention the enemies are all robots so far...I'm still at the very beginning of the game though (just took control of Hulk).
